Donner Summit

The Lake Tahoe snowshoeing tour will be in the area around Donner Summit named after the famous Donner Party who became snowed in and trapped in the area during the winter of 1846-47.

We will follow along local hiking trails including the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) which will be under the snow. No worries; I know the way! There will be fantastic views of Castle Peak and the surrounding area. We will stay clear of any steep avalanche terrain.

The snowshoe guided tour is approximately 3 miles round trip and may take up to 3 or 4 hours including breaks depending on the pace of the group. The price is $75 per person. There may be up to 7 people on this tour.

  • Experienced snowshoe guide certified as a Wilderness First Responder (medical training) and AIARE Avalanche Level I.

  • Directions to trailhead meeting spot.

  • Transportation to trailhead meeting spot not included.

Stay Warm

Staying warm and dry is essential to enjoying your snowshoe tours. Temperatures can be well below freezing at 7,000 feet.

Required Attire:

-Waterproof winter boots.

-Water proof / water resistant pants. These may include ski pants but never blue jeans or anything cotton. Cotton is bad because it can become soaked with water when exposed to snow and body heat.

-Warm Layers. Synthetic layers such as polyester or fleece are excellent choices because they dry quickly and don't absorb much water. Cotton layers should always be avoided. Layers that can unzip in the front are excellent for letting out the heat while exercising but can be zipped up while taking a break or if the wind picks up.

-Warm head gear like a winter hat or hood.

-Warm Gloves

-Water resistant jacket for outer layer

-Small backpack to carry your water and snacks. Backpacks are good for carrying extra layers too. You will need to eat more than normal to maintain your energy. Food is the fuel that will power your energy level.

Parking at the trailhead meeting site is near I-80 in a parking lot that is frequently snow plowed. This allows passenger cars to reach and park at the trailhead unless there is a snow storm. Specific directions and meeting instructions will be emailed after booking the tour.

Snacks & Water

Eating plenty of high energy food, drinking plenty water before and during the tour will all help you stay energized, motivated, and enjoying this winter adventure. Some limited amount of snacks like Cliff bars will be brought for the group to share but please also bring your own snacks and at least 1.5 litters of water. You will burn a lot of calories and need more food than normal to keep your energy high. Snack and water breaks should allow everyone to stay energized and motivated.

Snow Chains

Snow chains (cables) may be required on I-80 during periods of heavy snow. If it is snowing on Donner Summit there are likely to be chain controls in effect for cars that do not have winter tires and all wheel drive as you approach Donner Summit. You can check if chain controls are in effect by calling 800-427-7623 and entering the highway number (80 then click the Sierra option). You will receive a refund if there is a cancellation due to weather conditions.

This tour could be challenging for those who are not in good physical shape. The altitude of 7,200 feet can cause many to become tired faster than expected. The guide will set a pace that allows everyone to keep up.

If Our Adventure Trip, LLC cancels for any reason all participants will receive a full refund. Cancellations by us may include weather conditions or because of a sick guide.
